This activity is available and Florida Boards approved for Flagler Hospital employed or credentialed providers (MD, DO, DDS, DMD, DPM, PA, APRN) for free to fulfill the DEA Medical Access Training Expansion Act (MATE) requirement. You may complete Part 1 (Modules 1-4 and independent reading for 4 hours) if you did not attend Part 1 live activity or Part 2 (Modules 5-10 and independent reading for 4 hours) if you did not attend Part 2 live activity. If you did not attend either live activity, you will need to complete both Parts 1 & 2 (Modules 1-10 and independent readings for 8 hours).

PURPOSE/NEED:

According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) the purpose of the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act is to enable DEA-registered practitioners to “screen more widely for substance use disorders, treat pain appropriately, prevent substance misuse, and engage people in life-saving interventions”. The purpose of this CME activity is to provide medical practitioners with the necessary skills to evaluate and care for patients with addictive illness, including patients with concurrent pain and mental health issues.

OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

PART 1:

1. Describe the medical basis of Addiction Disease also referred to as Substance Use Disorders (SUD) including etiology and pathophysiology.

2. Discuss how to use validated screening tools for SUD to facilitate comprehensive SUD evaluations.

3. Explain ASAM Levels of Care for the treatment of SUDs.

4. Initiate and manage FDA-approved medications for SUD.

5. Apply presented screening tools and practice guides into medical practice.

PART 2:

6. Describe co-occurring mental disorders in the setting of substance abuse disorders (SUD) and concurrent medical illnesses with SUDs.

7. Explain emerging threats in opioids and the importance of educating a patient and their family on overdose prevention.

8. Discuss best practices regarding managing patient’s pain with co-occurring substance use disorders.

9. Recognize the importance of communication between medical specialties and using Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), such as Florida’s EFORCSE®.

10. Implement the utilization of presented specific addiction medicine documentation required to treat and manage patients with substance use disorders.
