Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) Caused by Naegleria fowleri

Activity Purpose/Professional Practice Gap:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida is currently one of the states with a high statistic of reported exposure of Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naegleria fowleri. The Florida Department of Health states that PAM has public health importance due to the reported high fatality rate. The recently published news articles about the infection of children with Naegleria fowleri, along with the fatality rate of this disease, requires physicians and hospital staff to have education on the topic.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to :
1. Describe incidence and case fatality of Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM).
2. Recognize and discuss red flags to clinically support PAM.
3. Discuss the immediate and effective treatment of PAM.
